What is a garden “moon gate?”
July 24, 2021
According to Wikipedia, A moon gate is a circular opening in a garden wall that acts as a pedestrian passageway and is a traditional architectural element in Chinese gardens. As it visually rises up out of the landscape, a moon gate is symbolic of birth and renewal. The birth of a new moon is the way in which time is marked and the new comes about. Perfect symbolism for a new marriage.

Moon gates were incorporated into the architecture of Bermuda in the late 19th century, and are slightly different from the original Chinese designs, as they are often left free-standing. In Bermuda, it is regarded as good luck for newlyweds to step through the gate.
